Gov. Wolf Announces He Has Treatable Form Of Prostate Cancer

HARRISBURG (KDKA) – Gov. Tom Wolf has announced that he has a treatable form of prostate cancer.

According to the governor, a regular checkup led to the diagnosis.

With his wife, Frances, sitting next to him at a Wednesday morning press conference, Wolf said the early detection means minimal disruption in his work, no transfer of power to the lieutenant governor and no concerns on his part about full recovery.

Gov. Wolf, 67, also emphasized the importance of regular screenings for all older men, as prostate cancer is a common and curable disease if detected early.

"Because I had the routine checkup, it was detected early, and I can do something about it. I want to make sure that this is an example why routine checkups actually matter and make a difference," Wolf said.

Wolf wouldn't get specific on his treatment, which will begin shortly and last for several months, but downplayed any impact on his work.

"My wife and I found out recently that I have a mild case of prostate cancer. We detected it early fortunately. It's easily treatable," Wolf said. "That's between me and my doctor how I treat this, but it's a mild -- it's going to be a routine treatment, and the doctor is very sanguine – optimistic."

"Of course I was concerned when I first heard, but also being reassured by the physicians that it was early and treatable and a really good prognosis. And I think we have great courage and feel all right. I feel more than hopeful," Frances Wolf said.

State Republicans joined in wishing Gov. Wolf well, with Party Chair Rob Gleason saying in a statement:

"Our Party may battle on policy issues with Gov. Tom Wolf, but we join him in his battle against prostate cancer. On behalf of the entire Republican Party of Pennsylvania, I want to offer Gov. Tom Wolf our thoughts and prayers and wish him a speedy recovery."
