Expert Tips For Packing A Healthy & Delicious School Lunch This Year

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) – Students are hitting the books again and that means parents will be sending their children off to school with what they hope will be a healthy and delicious meal.

But, how do you keep it up every day?

Leslie Bonci, nutritionist and owner of Active Eating Advice, tells the "KDKA Morning News" what you can put in your child's lunch to ensure they have everything they need.

Bonci says including something with protein is, "Critical...for muscle development and also for brain health."

According to Bonci, peanut butter and jelly or hummus and cheese are quick and healthy options.

"I want some color as part of that lunch meal...So, if you're going to do raw fruit, if you're going to do fruit salad, if you're going to do crunchy fruit like a freeze dried fruit or a dried fruit, bring it on. Maybe even something to dip," said Bonci.

Bonci also recommends freezing things ahead of time so you don't risk contamination. She says things like turkey and ham can be frozen the night before and will thaw by lunch time.

She says when it comes to drinks, packing a beverage is not always necessary because students can get a milk or water in the cafeteria that is already chilled.

Bonci adds avoiding sugary beverages is important and that pointing out to students the negative effects of soft drinks, energy drinks and other sugary beverages can help curb their desire for them.

"We're looking at something that doesn't provide satisfaction, what it doesn't have so how is that going to keep you energized to get through afternoon classes or even through your sport at the end of the day? That's the reason to find what's better...What can give you what is it that your body is really needing?" said Bonci.
