Thousands Pack Schenley Park For Annual 'Race For The Cure'

SCHENLEY PARK (KDKA) – Thousands of people packed Schenley Park for the 22nd Annual Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure Sunday morning.

The event raises money to fight breast cancer and honors those who lost their battle with the disease.

Organizers were expecting about 24,000 people to attend the event.

Proceeds from the event, "supports education, screening and treatment initiatives, including the

Mammogram Voucher Program, which provides free mammograms to women in need."

According to organizers, 75 percent of the proceeds remains in Komen Pittsburgh's region, while 25 percent goes to the Komen National research program.

This year alone Komen Pittsburgh will grant $1.3 million to local organizations dedicated to fighting breast cancer.
