Swissvale Fire Dept. Hosts Ash Wednesday Fish Fry

SWISSVALE (KDKA) -- The Swissvale Fire Department had a lot of fish to fry this Ash Wednesday.

Fire Department President David Nickel is also the chief cook. He'll serve up an average of 500 fish sandwiches each Friday during Lent.

They reel in the same customers each year. They're just hooked on that fish.

The fish frys raise about 70 percent of the department's mortgage each year. It's one of the few times that the fire chief has to take orders from someone else.

Assistant Chief Kip Deleonibus is chief bottle and pan washer.

"Everyone here has a niche, and my niche is washing pots and pans," he laughs.

In addition, they have macaroni and cheese, halushki, and, of course, this being Pittsburgh, they also have pierogies.
