Summer Road Construction Season Kicks Off

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Summer construction season is kicking off and it could mean delays for many drivers.

PennDOT is starting several projects Tuesday, and the majority of them will be lasting through the summer months.

In Richland Township, Route 8 northbound will be down to a single lane through August 1st.

The stretch of Route 8 from the Richland Mall north to Route 910 has remained in its original condition as the traffic demands have continued to grow.

Lane restrictions may start Wednesday or later in the week.

In Monroeville, 286 Golden Mile Highway will have lane restrictions from 22 to Old Frankstown Road.

Lane shifts start there Tuesday, as crews resurface and put in turn lanes. That project is expected to last until early November.

In Jefferson Hills, Route 51 from Coal Valley Road to West Elizabeth and the Mon river will have delays.

Crews are milling, and repaving the road. Drivers can expect lane restrictions and single lanes during paving in each direction. The work will primarily be done overnight, and will last through the summer.

PennDOT District 11 Executive Director Dan Cessna joined the KDKA Morning News with Larry Richert and John Shumway with an extensive list of the projects going on this summer. Cessna says there will be construction projects on Route 286 in Monroeville, Route 8 in Richland north bound, and Route 51 from Coal Valley to the Monongahela River.

This weekend will mark the last weekend the Squirrel Hill Tunnels will be completely shut down.

Cessna also wanted to remind people that the Route 28 project will be completed by Thanksgiving.
