Students At Monroeville Career Center Recycling Cars

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) -- Students in Josh Krentz's collision repair class at Forbes Road Career and Technology Center in Monroeville are at it again.

They're repairing a car to help a family in need. It's all for a nationwide program called Recycled Rides.

"This car is a little different," Krentz said. "It was donated through a body shop instead of being donated through insurance agents."

The students get to work alongside the owner of Flagship Collision, Michael Sullivan, and some of his staff. They are gaining real world experience.

"The kids are going to learn a little more having industry people coming in and doing these repairs as well," Krentz said.

The owner of Flagship Collision bought a 2011 Chevy Malibu for $2,200. Once all of the repairs are made, a lucky person is going to get a car valued at $12,000.

Sullivan also purchased the front section of another Chevy Malibu for $1,700 to help with repairs. It looks like the car suffered front end damage during an accident.

"We're gonna take the exterior plastic and sheet metal off of the clip we bought and put it on this car. There's a few structural components we need. We're looking for some donations to purchase those," Sullivan said.

Students said they're excited to work on it.

"Straighten dents, paint the car. Make it look brand new because some cars peel. They chip they get wrecked so it's always going to be a good business," said senior Brandon Kirkpatrick.

Once the project is finished, Krentz wants this car to go to someone who needs a vehicle to get to work, can't pay a monthly car payment and is supporting a family.

Kirkpatrick says this is his favorite part of the experience.

"I get done with the car and I'm just thinking to myself 'when I go home everyday someone great is going to have this car and we're going to be able to pick that person and they're going to have a better life," Kirkpatrick said.
