Steelers Rookie Working As Both A Quarterback And Wide Receiver
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Undrafted Steeler Tyler Murphy is adjusting to the game at the NFL level by learning multiple positions. The former quarterback has seen some time at wide receiver as well as holder during Spring voluntary practice.
"Playing wide receiver is new to me, but I'm trying to get the technique and the fundamentals down" Murphy said. "I've really had to study a lot more. You already have to study as a quarterback. Add in wide receiver and I have had to study that much more."
While taking on so much at once has been challenging, the undrafted free agent out of the University of Florida believes playing both positions can help him.
"I have a really good understanding of what is expected. I'm starting to realize how difficult it can be to play wide receiver and now playing quarterback I know it's important to make sure you get your spots."
Murphy feels more comfortable in the pocket, but also believes his skill set can make the adjustment.
"I'm going to get this wide receiver thing a try. I'm just trying to build upon it, add value to it, and get better at it."
Murphy is not the only quarterback turned wide receiver for the Steelers during OTAs. Former University of Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner is also attempting to make a career at wide receiver.
