Pennsylvania State Police trooper hit by vehicle

A Pennsylvania State Police trooper was hit by the driver of a vehicle while at the scene of a crash in Butler County on Monday.

In a news release posted to social media, state police said the trooper was taken to a local hospital in stable condition after the crash, which happened around 2 p.m. on Interstate 79 north at the state Route 422 exit.

Authorities said the trooper was at the scene investigating a two-vehicle crash when they were hit. State police said the driver of the vehicle who hit the trooper remained at the scene. They were not identified on Monday.

Lt. Joseph Zandarski told KDKA on Monday night that the trooper suffered a leg injury and was expected to spend the night at the hospital. She is in good spirits, according to Zandarski. The trooper's identity was not released, but she works out of the barracks in Butler, Zandarski said.

"The trooper was on scene for a crash due to icy conditions on the ramp," Zandarski said. "This other vehicle slid on the ice and then struck the trooper."

"People do need to be aware of inclement conditions and please slow down and move over as best as you can to let first responders do their job," he added. "Just make the roads safer for everybody."

Law enforcement is investigating the crash. It was not immediately clear if the driver would be charged.

"We will complete our investigation and go from there," Zandarski said.
