PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- Police say a man who was walking along tracks with a woman pushed the woman out of the way before being struck and killed by a train Wednesday afternoon.

The man and woman were walking on the train tracks at East Carson Street and Arlington Avenue near Station Square just before 5:30 p.m.

Sources tell KDKA the pair may have been playing a card game while they were walking along the rails. Police confirm cards were found scattered at the scene.

Norfolk Southern says the train crew sounded the horn and put the train in braking, but could not stop in time.

According to police, the man pushed the woman out of the way before he was struck.

"For whatever reason, they did not hear the train approaching. At the last moment, the male realized that the train was coming and was able to push the female out of the way. She was still clipped by the train, but he was struck directly by the train," Pittsburgh Police spokesperson Chris Togneri said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as 20-year-old Conlan Onder, of Baldwin.

The woman was critically injured and transported to a local hospital. She remained hospitalized Thursday in serious condition, but her name and further details on her injuries were not disclosed.

The accident remains under investigation.
