Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Vehicle In South Park

SOUTH PARK (KDKA) -- A pedestrian died after he was struck by a vehicle in South Park on Monday night.
It happened just before 10 p.m. in the 3500 block of Snowden Road.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found a male lying in the road with "massive head trauma." He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as John Jenkins, 48, of New Eagle.
A woman who lives near the scene tried to help Jenkins. Sharon Satterfield's grandson was the first to spot the victim in the road.
"Gram, he said, there's somebody laying in the road up there," said Satterfield. "He went ahead on up, and I grabbed a blanket and a few things, thinking, what if he needs help."
At least three passersby said they saw Jenkins walking along Snowden Road before he was struck. Police say he was staying with a friend who lives on the street. One driver described his gait as unstable.
The injuries to Jenkins' head and torso were severe.
"It's more than likely that the operator of the vehicle knew they struck something," said Allegheny County Police Lt. Andrew Schurman.
Anyone who was in the 3000 block of Snowden Road between 9:30 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. is asked to call the Allegheny County Police homicide unit at (412)-473-1300.

"It was not pleasant, and I feel sorry for this man who lost his life in such a horrible way and whoever his loved ones are," Satterfield said.
Snowden Road was shut down for accident reconstruction. It reopened early Tuesday morning.
