Fire Inside Downtown Parking Garage Leaves Vehicles Damaged

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Firefighters rushed to the Stanwix Street parking garage in Downtown Pittsburgh Thursday afternoon to battle a fire inside the structure.

Reports of smoke and flames coming from the garage started coming in around 4 p.m.

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety officials, two to three vehicles reportedly caught fire on the fourth floor of the garage.

Flames and thick smoke poured out of the side of the building while the fire raged. Officials say heavy smoke traveled up the stairwells of the office complex attached to the structure.

"I was just wondering if anyone was going to get hurt up there. There was like a million cars in there, too, you never know," said Emily Bezbatchenko, a witness. "The firefighters are obviously so brave."

Fire crews shut down Stanwix Street and Fort Duquesne Boulevard while they battled the flames. The roads have since been reopened.

The incident snarled traffic and held up commuters who park in the garage that were leaving work for the day.
