Teenager dies following Hill District shooting that injured one other person
A teenage boy has died following a Hill District shooting that injured one other person.
Joseph Powell, 17, of Beechview was shot along Wylie Avenue on Thursday evening in the city's Hill District just before 9 p.m.
Pittsburgh Police said officers were first called to the area of Wylie Avenue after receiving a 20-round ShotSpotter alert.
When first responders arrived, they found Powell, who had been shot in the chest and in the leg.
Powell was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died a short time later, per a release from the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office.
Police said officers who were at the scene were told that a possible suspect in the shooting may have been in a nearby building, prompting SWAT officers to come and clear the home.
While clearing the building, a 22-year-old man who had been shot in the leg came out of the home. He was taken to the hospital by medics and was last said to be in stable condition.
Police said two people were detained for additional questioning. It's unclear if either person will face charges in connection with the shooting.
The investigation, which has been referred to as ongoing, is being handled by the police bureau's Violent Crime Unit.
