Health Officials: Wash Hands Frequently To Avoid Shigella Bacteria

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Allegheny County health officials are urging people to use caution as a bacteria called Shigella is being passed around.

Officials say it's easily transferred through contaminated food, water or by a person who hasn't washed their hands after handing a diaper or using the restroom.

Shigella can cause a number of gastrointestinal issues, including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps. Officials say symptoms can last up to a week and usually start one to three days after being exposed to the bacteria.

Anyone can get it, but it's most commonly seen in children and the elderly.

Officials say the best way to avoid being contaminated or contaminating others is to wash your hands frequently for at least 30 seconds.

Anyone with information about Shigella can call the Allegheny County Health Department at 412-687-2243.
