Shenango Twp. Police Officer Attacked By Pit Bull, Officer's Partner Shoots Dog

NEW CASTLE (KDKA) -- A Shenango Township Police officer was attacked by a pit bull Thursday in South New Castle Borough in Lawrence County.

The officer and his partner were responding to a burglar alarm on East Tressler Avenue.

When they got to the home, no one was there, but they found a door was open, so they went inside to investigate further. The dog lunged at one of the officers, biting him twice on the leg.

When the animal came at the officer's partner, the second officer shot the canine. A short time later, the homeowner arrived, and took her wounded dog to the vet.

The officer who suffered the bite wounds went to Jameson Hospital and received the first in a series of shots rabies shots.

Police said they were unable to immediately determine if the dog that attacked the officer had proper tags and rabies vaccines, so the investigation is ongoing.
