Several Local Parades & Events Mark Memorial Day

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) –Today is Memorial Day and while many will be celebrating an extra day off from work, it is important to remember the significance of the day.

Locally, there are several activities being held to mark the day.

Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum will hold their annual celebration, which is free and open to the public.

"Memorial Day holds a very special meaning at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum. It is the essence of our mission that honors and remembers those who have fallen in service to our country," said President & CEO John F. McCabe. "As a reminder of the true meaning of Memorial Day, it is customary for us to begin our program with a memorial ceremony that reflects and honors the men and women who have sacrificed their lives while serving our country."

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Among the oldest Memorial Day parades in the country is the annual Saint Mary's and Allegheny Cemetery Association Parade in Lawrenceville.

Today, people lined the streets and waved flags as the parade route made its way down Butler Street into the Allegheny Cemetery for a traditional military memorial service.

In Zelienople, services began with a fly-over from the Condor Aero Club.

Participants heard a list of local soldiers killed in the line of duty, followed by a rifle salute and "Taps."
