CBS News projects Democrat Lt. Gov. John Fetterman defeats Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania U.S. Senate race

Lt. Gov. John Fetterman wins Pa. Senate race

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- CBS News has projected that Lt. Governor John Fetterman has defeated Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania's U.S. Senate race.

The race for the open Pennsylvania Senate seat between Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman and Republican opponent Dr. Mehmet Oz tightened into a virtual tie in the final weeks of the midterm campaign.

The two were competing for retiring Republican Senator Pat Toomey's seat.

Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman will be Pennsylvania's next U.S. Senator after defeating Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz in Tuesday's election.

Fetterman  gave his victory speech at Stage AE on Pittsburgh's North Shore just after 1 a.m., saying he is humbled and thanked his supporters.

CBS News called the race just after 1 a.m.

Right now, projections show the former mayor of Braddock as the winner by a little more than 1% of the vote.

This was one of the most contentious and most expensive Senate contests in this election.

The race for the open Senate seat tightened into a virtual tie in the final weeks of the midterm campaign.

Fetterman and Oz were vying for the seat held by retiring Republican Senator Pat Toomey -- and now Fetterman is flipping the seat for Democrats.

In his speech, he thanked his family, his wife, his team, and his supporters in the room, in the state, and across the country.

Fetterman said the campaign was always about fighting for anyone who has been knocked down but never got back up.

He ran his campaign while recovering from a stroke he suffered earlier this year, ending his speech saying he will never let his supporters down.

Fetterman also received a word of congratulations from President Biden, according to CNN Senior White House correspondent Phil Mattingly.
