Sean Casey: Current MLB Playoff System 'Is Getting There'
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – MLB Network analyst and Pittsburgh fan favorite Sean Casey joined "The Fan Morning Show" on Thursday to talk about the Pirates as the stretch run gets underway in Major League Baseball.
Casey discussed MLB's current playoff system, which may force the Pirates to play in a one-game Wild Card play-in game even if they win nearly 100 games.
Casey thinks the system has done well, even though it may be frustrating to Pirates fans.
"Nothing's ever perfect," Casey said. "But, I think if you look at that playoff system, it's great. The second Wild Card has brought so much more interest to Major League Baseball."
Still though, he thinks it could use some work.
"I don't think it's a perfect system," Casey said. "It's getting there."
Casey would like to see the Wild Card playoff expanded so it doesn't come down to a single game, because he knows how it feels to lose in that one-game-for-all-the-marbles situation.
"Having played in that one-game playoff in 1999, we had game 163 against the Mets, and we won 96 games - the Reds that year, and losing that game that night to the Mets was a tough pill to swallow. For one game, having played all those games. Hopefully at some point they at least make this…maybe a three-game series, so at least you have a couple pitching matchups in there."
