Sarver Native Wounded In Naval Base Stabbing In Virginia

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (KDKA/AP) - The sailor who is recovering after being stabbed in an attack at a base in Virginia on Friday is a native of Butler County.

The Navy says Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin Powell is now listed in good condition.

Powell's condition was updated Saturday. The 25-year-old from Sarver, Pennsylvania, had been listed Friday night in critical condition after surgery.

He was wounded in the neck and chest.

"His parents, Justin's parents, are driving in from Pennsylvania," said Capt. Jake Johansson, of the U.S. Navy. "He's a native of Sarver, Pa., and he did join the Navy in July of 2007."

The attack on Powell early Friday in Portsmouth sparked an hours-long lockdown and manhunt before his suspected assailant was arrested.

"It was scary at first, unbelievable, and then was like, wow this is really happening because police were coming by, so it was like it's happening. This is not a drill," said one person on the base.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Wilbur Harwell was arrested nearby in Virginia Beach.

The Navy said the stabbing occurred outside the Navy Exchange at Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, Portsmouth Annex.

There's no word so far on a motive in the stabbing or what charges Harwell will face.
