Rt. 88 To Partially Close For 5 Months Starting Monday

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Part of Route 88 will be closed for the next five months, starting Monday night.

The closure affects the northbound side of the road between Route 51 and Tariff Street.

The starts at 7 p.m. Monday.

The next phase of work requires building a massive culvert under Rt. 88 in the quarter mile before 51 and detouring the northbound traffic for almost 5 miles.

"It's not an easy detour, it's about 6 miles," said Dan Cessna with PennDOT.

Which is also the directions trucks will go, with PennDOT fully expecting local car drivers to find their own alternatives.

The work is part of the nearly $19 million Routes 51 and 88 project, which includes replacing five different bridges and building another one.

The closure is expected to end the week before Thanksgiving.
