Roethlisberger Out Indefinitely With Sprained Left Knee

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) - Ben Roethlisberger's season doesn't appear to be over. Still, the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to move forward indefinitely without their star quarterback.

Coach Mike Tomlin said Monday Roethlisberger has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee and there is no timetable for his return.

Tomlin released this statement Monday morning:

"The MRI on Sunday night revealed Ben Roethlisberger had an MCL injury to his left knee. There is no timetable for his return, but Ben is a competitor and we are confident he will do everything in his power to return at the appropriate time."

During his Monday press conference, Tomlin said the injury will keep Roethlisberger out for "a number of weeks," and they're not sure yet when he'll be able to begin rehabbing the injury.

Michael Vick will start Thursday night when the Steelers (2-1) host winless Baltimore (0-3).

Roethlisberger left in the third quarter of Sunday's 12-6 win over St. Louis after the knee bent awkwardly while getting sacked by Rams safety Mark Barron. An MRI taken late Sunday night revealed no major damage, leaving the door open for Roethlisberger to return at some point.

Vick completed 5 of 6 passes for 38 yards after Roethlisberger's departure.

Meanwhile, Tomlin said James Harrison and Matt Spaeth also suffered injuries in St. Louis. Harrison hurt his thumb and Spaeth suffered a fractured hand.

Also, Ryan Shazier's status remains unknown against the Ravens. They have to re-evaluate his shoulder strength.
