Rockslide Closes Part Of Road In Penn Hills

PENN HILLS (KDKA) – A rockslide shut down a road in Penn Hills for hours on Tuesday.

According to officials, all lanes of Allegheny River Boulevard, near Nadine Road, were blocked.

The amount of recent rain likely caused the ground to give way.

Meanwhile, the slide caused two crashes in the area.

"There [were] actually two separate crashes. One female actually struck the rock and got hit by the rocks that came down off the hillside. The second crash was caused from backlog of cars backing up and stopping for the crash. She had a minor injury, very minor, required no medical treatment or transportation. The other parties were all fine," Lincoln Park Fire Chief Shawn Snyder said.

As traffic was detoured, clearing the little stuff was easy, but the big stuff?

"There's some rock behind us that weighs between 3,000 and 4,000 lbs.," Snyder said.

PennDOT's equipment was able to lift and drop portions of the road, and shale did what shale does -- splinter and fragmented into manageable pieces so it could be hauled away in a parade of trucks.

PennDOT does not consider the area on either side of the landslide to be an imminent concern.

The road reopened around 2 p.m., escaping an afternoon rush hour mess.
