Rob Biertempfel: Pirates Re-Sign Liriano At A Reasonable Price

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review joined Chris Mack on "The Fan Late Shift" from Major League Baseball's Winter Meetings.

Biertempfel reported that the Pirates re-signed Francisco Liriano to a three-year, $39 contract pending a physical.

"You never know maybe exactly what you're going to get with him, but then again, it's a crapshoot with any pitcher anymore really when you think about it," Biertempfel said. "You're getting him at what in 2015 dollars is a pretty reasonable price. Three years is good for them. The Pirates didn't want to go four unless they absolutely, positively had to."

Mack asked about the status of Pedro Alvarez, and Biertempfel said that the Pirates are trying to shop him.

"The Pirates have put him out there at times on the trade market. They did it in July, they're doing it again this winter and there's just not many takers. His value probably has never been lower simply because of his defensive problems, because of the things that he doesn't do a lot of the time at the plate," Biertempfel said.
