RMU Basketball Player Arrested On South Side

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Robert Morris University basketball player Stephan Bennett was arrested over the weekend on the South Side.

According to police, he was arrested outside of Mario's Saloon during the overnight hours Saturday into Sunday.

Officers were initially called to the scene for an issue with crowd control.

In the process of escorting everyone out, Bennett's girlfriend was taken into custody.

At that time, Bennett allegedly took a fighting stance with an officer, lunged at him and pushed him backwards.

Another cop responded and they tried to get Bennett to cooperate.

Bennett refused and officers used a leg sweep maneuver to get him on the ground.

He is charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, failure to disperse, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

A spokesman for the university said they are aware of the incident.

Bennett, who normally comes off the bench, was removed from the team as it prepares to play St. Francis for the conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament if they win.

"It's tough and I know the team is going to miss him and ... is going to miss his presence," said student Richard Kamau.
