Residents Flee As Fire Destroys Pitcairn Duplex

PITCAIRN (KDKA) - Fire forced residents out of a duplex in Pitcairn overnight.

Firefighters were called to the scene in the 500 block of 5th Street around midnight.

"All of sudden, my bedroom was a ball of orange and I looked outside my bedroom window and the house across the street was in flames," one woman said.

"And I happened to see all this flame, fire. I mean, it was coming out bad," Carol Robinson said.

Everyone inside the duplex, including a dog, was able to get out safely, but the building was destroyed.

Neighbors say a man they know as Tim lived on one side, while another man named Barry lived on the other.

Both were able to escape unharmed. Neighbors say Tim, who is a veteran, and his dog sat on their porch, helpless and watched everything burn. Neighbors said Tim doesn't have insurance.

As flames shot out from every window, the firefighters' safety became a concern as a portion of the duplex collapsed.

One firefighter suffered chest pains, but is okay.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross is assisting two men who were displaced by the fire.

A fire marshal was called to investigate the cause.
