1 Hospitalized, Others Evacuated After Fire At Penn Hills Apartment Building

PENN HILLS (KDKA) – A woman was hospitalized and residents were evacuated after fire broke out at a local apartment complex.

Emergency dispatchers say a fire started in an apartment at the Alcoma On The Green apartments in Penn Hills.

It started before 1:30 p.m.

Officials say the fire started in the 4th-floor kitchen of a 72-year-old woman.

She was taken to the hospital.

"It is my apartment," said Garland Robinson. "My whole apartment's burned down."

Robinson lived in the apartment with his grandmother. She was at home alone when the fire started.

"I called him and he said, 'well Miss Pat, I'm downtown,'" said tenant Patricia Talley. "And I said, 'What apartment is your grandmother in?' And he told me and I said 'Well, that apartment is on fire.'"

Officials said the smoke traveled quickly, but the fire appeared to be contained to unit 410.

The apartment building is divided and officials say all residents on that side of the building were evacuated -- 45 people were treated on the scene for minor injuries.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined yet.

"I'm not worried about no material things," said Robinson. "My grandma had three strokes on the brain. My grandma don't know, I don't know what caused it."
