Residents Evacuated After Bricks Begin Falling From Pitcairn's Young Hotel

PITCAIRN (KDKA) -- Residents were evacuated from the Young Hotel in Pitcairn Friday evening when bricks began falling off the side of the building.

The Pitcairn Fire Department was called to the scene in the 300-block of Broadway Boulevard around 6:20 p.m.

Pitcairn Borough Code Enforcement Officer Lucas Park says some of the bricks and embellishments on the façade fell right off the structure.

"I was walking by, and a side of the building just fell down," added resident Jerry Reed. "It just fell, collapsed. Luckily, nobody was walking by and got hurt or nothing."

Officials say a contractor was brought in to remove the falling debris, and next week a building inspector will come in to examine the structure and make sure it's safe for the residents to return.

"On Monday morning, we're going to have a third party company come inspect the building thoroughly," said Park.

In the meantime, the residents are being helped by the Red Cross.

"At this point, the residents are going down to the fire hall and they're going to be assisted by the American Red Cross," Park added.

The Red Cross says they are providing shelter and food for about 30 residents overnight at the Pitcairn #1 Vol. Fire Department.

No one was injured in the incident.
