Reports: Pirates, Marte Agree To 6-Year Extension

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) - It appears the Pittsburgh Pirates and outfielder Starling Marte have reached an agreement on a contract extension.

According to multiple reports, the Pirates and outfielder Starling Marte have agreed on a six-year contract extension.

The deal was first reported on Twitter by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. It was later confirmed by Jon Heyman of CBS.

Jim Duquette of MLB.com said that the contract is worth $31 million over 6-years, with two club options.

The deal is pending a physical and the Pirates have not officially confirmed it yet.

Earlier this week, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that Starling Marte turned down two contract offers from the Pirates during the offseason.

Marte was a finalist for a Gold Glove in 2013, his first full season in the majors. The 25-year-old hit .280 with 12 home runs, 35 RBI and 41 stolen bases while helping the Pirates reach the postseason for the first time since 1992.

Pittsburgh opens the season March 31 at home against the Chicago Cubs.
