Report: The Time Might Not Be Right To Call Up Prospect Polanco

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Here in Pittsburgh, we've seen almost every national article written about Pirates top prospect Gregory Polanco, imploring the team to call him up to help improve their offense.

What we haven't seen much of is somebody pointing out the reasons why waiting just another month to call up Polanco might be the right move.

The reason for not calling Polanco up has mostly been service time and wanting to keep him under team control longer, and Rob Neyer of Fox Sports points out that at this point, we may not even be looking at a full month before the Pirates can call him up.

Furthermore, Neyer looks at what Jose Tabata and Travis Snider have done in Right Field, and how many wins Polanco would be worth over them playing in just a few weeks worth of games that could cost the team an extra year of control.

The greatest point Neyer makes, though, is that he believes contending teams should promote their best players when it makes sense on the field, but it's not clear that the Pirates are contenders at this point.

For even more coverage on the teams top prospect, you can read here what Pirates President Frank Coonelly told The FAN Morning Show about Polanco and the contract offer the team made to him.

Stay tuned to 93-7 The FAN for continuing coverage of Gregory Polanco's progress.
