Report: Munchak To Interview For Penn State Job, Golden Staying With Miami

PITTSBURGH (KDKA)- One day after being fired as head coach of the Tennessee Titans, Mike Munchak will get an interview at his alma mater, according to a report.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported Sunday morning that Munchak would interview for the Penn State coaching position on Sunday.

Munchak was 22-26 in three seasons with the Titans. He has no college coaching experience, but the Scranton, Pa. native played college football at Penn State before embarking on a 12-year NFL career.

He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Miami coach Al Golden reportedly interviewed for the Penn State coaching position on Saturday.

However, Golden will not return to his alma mater, after all.

Amid speculation that he was a leading candidate to replace Bill O'Brien at Penn State, Golden released a statement Sunday that said he's staying at Miami.

"There has been much speculation concerning my future at the University of Miami," Golden said in a statement. "While I am flattered that our progress at The U during an extremely difficult period of time is recognized, I am also appreciative of just what we have here at UM and I am not a candidate for another position. We are eager to welcome our student athletes back to campus next week and visit with prospective student-athletes and their families beginning January 15."

Miami Athletic Director Blake James had stated that he expected Golden to stay with the Hurricanes.

Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is also considered a top candidate for the job, but is also reportedly being courted by several NFL teams as well.
