High-Resolution Cameras To Be Installed In Monroeville To Curb Crime

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) - The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office will soon purchase and install 12 high-resolution video cameras to monitor traffic in Monroeville.

You look up and it seems like someone is always watching, but Monroeville Police are taking surveillance to another level.

Following the shooting at Macy's in the Monroeville Mall in February of 2015 where three people were injured, and more recently, a shooting at a shopping plaza in Monroeville in June; the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office is purchasing 12 high-definition surveillance cameras.

They will be installed throughout the community.

"For any of the bad guys who are happening to be watching this, we will know who you are. You may think you're going to get away, but we will find you," said Monroeville Mayor Greg Erosenko.

Mayor Erosenko says these cameras will be a valuable tool for officers, and part of larger network of surveillance cameras throughout the county.

"People come to Monroeville because it's a central area to come to; and then, we unfortunately get our share of problems, crime," said Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole.

The cameras will also be equipped with license plate readers that will work with a database. They'll be able to pick up license plates on vehicles of interest.

"Stolen vehicles, wanted persons for serious crimes, obviously Amber Alerts," Chief Cole said.

The first dozen cameras should be installed in the next few weeks and Monroeville is planning on adding even more in the future.

Monroeville is also asking businesses to do their part.

The mayor told KDKA that he's encouraging local business owners to install their own security systems to add to the expanding security network in the area.
