Quilt Making An Art That Spans Generations For Washington Co. Family
EIGHTY-FOUR, Pa. (KDKA) -- Mother, daughter, and granddaughter. Three generations of quilt-makers work their magic together in a basement in Eighty-Four, Washington County.
"Somebody's on the quilting machine," says the grandmother, Ruth Ann Lowry. "Somebody's on the sewing machine. Somebody's cutting at the cutting table. Somebody's ironing at the ironing board. And then you turn around to the ironing board and, whoops, somebody else is there. So you do another step until the iron's available."
She teaches a class at Quilters Corner in Finleyville. But for her daughter, Sally Ferko, it just comes naturally.
"She always had a machine set up, maybe the dining room table or in the basement," Sally says. "And I would watch it. I would make some doll clothes."
Her 8-year-old daughter, Lizzie Ferko, started way back when she was just a kid.
"I sat on my grandma's lap and I steered it," Lizzie says. "And she just pushed the pedal and stuff."
The family's work will be among 140 colorful quilts on display at the IBEW Circuit Center near the Hot Metal Bridge during the annual Three Rivers Quilt Show. The show opens Thursday and continues through Saturday.
Visitors will also see demonstrations showing how it's done.
