Pres. Obama Names New Ambassador To Ireland

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A St. Louis lawyer has been nominated to be the next US ambassador to Ireland.

The president nominated Kevin O'Malley Thursday.

Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney served as the US ambassador to Ireland since 2009, according to our news partners at the Post-Gazette. Rooney has spent many years involved in Irish causes.

Rooney also released a statement Thursday lauding President Obama's choice for the next ambassador.

"I have had the opportunity to speak with Kevin, as a top attorney and legal scholar, he is extremely bright," Rooney said. "He also showed a deep compassion for others and has a strong record of public service. I believe these attributes will allow him to quickly build the relationships necessary to lead the Embassy."

Rooney also says he invited O'Malley to Pittsburgh to talk about their roles as ambassadors to Ireland.
