Pregnant Woman Shot, Killed In Brighton Heights

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police are investigating after a pregnant woman was shot and killed in a hail of gunfire Tuesday night in the city's Brighton Heights section.

It happened after 9 p.m. near the intersection of Fleming and Richardson Avenues.

The woman, identified as 27-year-old Deona Barnett, died a short time later at UPMC Mercy Hospital.  Police found Barnett lying on the sidewalk, her belongings were scattered around her.

Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said the woman was walking near the intersection of Fleming Avenue and Antrim Street when a "shadowy figure" fired multiple rounds at her.

An eyewitness told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti, "I heard one gunshot, a brief pause, then I heard eight or nine more shots."

He said neighbors tended to the girl as she lay on the ground bleeding before paramedics arrived.

Police say Barnett was shot multiple times. She was six weeks pregnant, and leaves behind five other children.
