Police shoot suspect in Homestead after pursuit

HOMESTEAD, Pa. (KDKA) — A suspect was shot by police Monday night in Homestead.

Pittsburgh Public Safety said on Twitter that the incident started in Pittsburgh and ended in Homestead. Pittsburgh police tried to make a traffic stop in Squirrel Hill but the driver of the vehicle took off and crashed near 8th Avenue in Homestead, Allegheny County police said.

Officials said the driver rammed multiple police cars, and Allegheny County police said the driver hopped out of the vehicle and shot at police on Amity Street. A Homestead police officer returned fire, shooting the suspect, officials said. A West Homestead officer then ran over the suspect with his vehicle, officials said.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

No officers were shot and there was no police pursuit, law enforcement said. Officials are looking for a second suspect who also was in the vehicle. Pittsburgh Public Safety said no city officers were involved in the shooting.

Police said the person shot was a known suspect in an investigation and was wanted. It is not clear what led up to the traffic stop or who the suspect is. Allegheny County police are investigating.

KDKA-TV talked to a man who was injured in a hit-and-run crash with the suspect in Homestead. He said he was on the Homestead Grays Bridge when the suspect crashed into the back of his vehicle. The front bumper of the suspect's vehicle was apparently ripped off in the crash.

"There was a car that was directly behind me and hit me straight in the back," the man said. "Then it wheeled around, took the left and crossed me."

The man who was hit suffered injuries and said he was traumatized.
