Man Charged With Shooting Woman In Face Near Cal U's Campus

CALIFORNIA, Pa. (KDKA) -- A man is facing charges for allegedly shooting a woman in the face with a rifle near the California University of Pennsylvania campus Tuesday night.

According to a release from the California Borough Police Chief, the suspect fired a rifle into a vehicle that was parked in his yard. A Pittsburgh woman was hit in the face and arm and another man was grazed.

David Mounts, 20, is in jail and is facing charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person.

According to police, Mounts reportedly fired a .22-gauge rifle through the passenger window of a vehicle parked at his home on Highland Drive, around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say evidence shows Mounts fired at least five times.

"It's very scary, I remember being very scared. I was nervous, I called my mom," said Gabby Irving, a California University of Pennsylvania student, who lives at the nearby Vulcan Village Apartments.

Irving said she didn't hear gunshots, but received several text and email notifications about the incident from the university.

"I remember asking around like are we under lockdown or anything like that? Then, we actually got another text message," said Irving.

The shooting didn't involve anyone at the University, but the communications director said alerts were sent so students would be aware.

Several hours later, a suspect was in custody.

Irving said she was relieved.

"Eventually, we got a text message saying both people were in custody and then I remember seeing a Snapchat of my friend who saw a helicopter," she said.

Despite initial reports of a second suspect, police say only one person was involved.

Mounts was taken to the Washington County Jail to await his arraignment.
