17-Year-Old Girl Shot And Killed In Homewood

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Police aren't saying anything about a possible motive following a fatal shooting in Homewood Saturday afternoon.

Daija McCall, 17, was found lying near the corner of Mt. Vernon and Belmar streets.

A Pittsburgh School District spokeswoman said McCall was a sophomore at Pittsburgh Carrick High School.

Friends and relatives of McCall didn't want to talk to reporters as they gathered  outside a row house, not far from where her body was found, some of them openly crying.  One neighbor said he was shocked that someone would  shoot and kill a young woman in broad daylight.  He called it a cold-blooded murder.

The incident took place only a few blocks from Westinghouse High School.

Sonya Toler, a Pittsburgh Police Public Information Officer, said shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, police got a gunshot detector notification that shots were fired in the neighborhood.  Toler said it appeared that 11 shots were fired.

There was no description of the gunman or gunmen involved.  Police would not say if McCall was the intended target, or if she was with someone else at the time.
