Police Officer Injured In Wilkinsburg Crash

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A police officer was hurt Sunday night in a crash in Wilkinsburg.

According to police, the accident happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday along Penn Avenue, near Trenton Avenue.

Police say the officer was responding to an emergency call, when another driver failed to yield.

"He was traveling westbound down Penn Avenue towards the Parkway. He approached the intersection of Trenton and Penn Avenue and was T-boned," Wilkinsburg Police Chief Ophelia Coleman said.

In addition to the driver, police say there were two children inside the SUV. One child was taken to Children's Hospital to get checked out. The driver of the SUV was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. The police officer was also taken to a local hospital and is still there recovering from his injuries.

"We don't want to hear anyone being injured in a vehicle accident. It's really tough given what happened to the officer in Perryopolis. A sad situation," Chief Coleman said.

Penn Avenue was closed for about an hour while police investigated the crash.

Witnesses say the police car came flying out of the GetGo nearby and hit the SUV just a block away.
