Police: Mother Allowed Man To Physically Abuse 5- And 6-Year-Old Sons

WESTMORELAND COUNTY (KDKA) – State Police say a home in Grapeville was a house of horrors.

"It seemed like torture what they were going through, living in that household," said State Police Tpr. Steve Limani.

The boys, ages 5 and 6, were allegedly repeatedly physically abused by 35-year-old Barry Wayne Woods.

"Based on the information we received, Mr. Woods was kicking the boy and physically assaulting him," said  Limani. "The children were forced out in the snow in shorts and T-shirts. They had different objects that they were forced to eat -- feces and things of that nature."

And investigators say the mother of the abused boys, an emergency medical technician, knew it was happening.

"She avoided contacting us and kept it a secret," Limani said. "She was more concerned with her job and CYS than the welfare of her children."

Authorities finally became involved when a school nurse noticed bruising and alerted police.

Jana Rea Mannarino is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and was ordered not to contact her children – all of which are in the care of CYS.

Meanwhile, Barry Wayne Wood's substantial list of charges was added to.

Mannarino is free on bond, while Woods remains in the Westmoreland County Jail on a $250,000 straight cash bond.
