Police: Lifer Attacks Guard With Shank At SCI-Greene

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (AP) - State police say a guard is recovering after he was attacked with a shank by an inmate serving a life sentence for murder at a state prison in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Police have yet to release the inmate's name, saying the investigation into the incident Thursday at the State Correctional Institution-Greene remains under investigation. A spokeswoman for the maximum security prison couldn't immediately provide additional information Monday.

Police say the guard suffered 10 mostly superficial wounds to his head and torso, though one cut to the back of his head required stitches. Police say he was treated and released from a hospital.

Police say the guard was able to partially subdue the other inmate before other guards rushed to help.

The attack occurred in the prison's general population area.
