Police Investigating Death Of Girl, 2, In Uniontown

UNIONTOWN (KDKA)- Uniontown Police and the Pennsylvania State Police are looking into the death of a child in Fayette County.

According to police, the mother was feeding her child at a home on Collins Avenue around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. When the child appeared to be sick, the woman took the girl to Uniontown Hospital, where she later died.

At this point, it is unclear what led to the girl's death. She has been identified as Lydia Wright.

A search warrant allowed Uniontown Police along with a Pennsylvania State Police forensics unit to comb through the home Wednesday afternoon.

Wright lived at the home with her mother, father and two other kids ages, 3 and 5. Police haven't said why, but confirmed that two boys were taken from the home by Children and Youth Services.

Casa Nova Humble Smith lives across the street. She said the family rarely came outside and that the house was always dark.

"The baby would come out with the diapers falling off, it was very terrible," she said.

No charges have been filed at this point and police have not said if the child's death is suspicious. They say the investigation is standard procedure after a death like this.

An autopsy on the child was performed this morning by Dr. Cyril Wecht in Pittsburgh. The results are pending.
