Police Arrest Man For Allegedly Stealing Woman's Purse From Store Parking Lot

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police have arrested the man they say stole a woman's purse from a Shaler Township store parking lot on New Year's Eve.

Police were able to identify 35-year-old Sherman Jones after releasing surveillance photos from a gas station where Jones allegedly used the stolen credit cards.

Police say Jones took those credit cards from a woman outside of the Walgreens in Shaler on New Year's Eve.

Sherman allegedly asked the woman to use her cell phone, and when she handed it to him, he grabbed her purse off the seat of her car.

Police say the victim then backed her car into Jones' car and chased him into a residential area before she called police.

"We don't recommend that. Certainly had she gone in the store and called us right away, we might have had a better chance. I guess in the heat of the moment she took it upon herself to try and stop this," Shaler Township Police Chief Bryan Kelly said.

Sherman Jones is facing robbery and related charges, he is being held in the Allegheny County Jail.
