Pittsburgh Zoo Closed By Power Outage, Transformer Problem

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has closed for the day due to a power outage.

Power was restored about 8:45 a.m. after the hour-long outage that affected the zoo and about 700 other Duquesne Light customers on Tuesday morning.

Utility spokeswoman Jessica Rock says a transformer failed and had to be replaced.

Zoo spokeswoman Tracy Gray says the facility uses backup generators to run its aquariums and otherwise keep animals warm when the power goes down in colder weather.

A power company spokeswoman didn't immediately return calls.

The zoo expects to reopen Wednesday morning.
