PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The snow started coming down late Sunday afternoon, quickly coating roads and slowing down drivers.

Police departments in several municipalities had to shut down and block off slick, dangerous sections of many streets until salt trucks and plows could reach and treat them.

In Dormont, a stretch of Potomac was closed while crews towed away a car that hit a fire hydrant.

"Obviously, the snow came down pretty quick. The roads, they got really slippery and icy pretty fast. There was accidents all over the place," Sgt. Jim Briglia told KDKA's Kym Gable.

In Crafton, hills and ridges were also slick and snow-covered.

In the city of Pittsburgh, drivers put their hazard lights on as they sat on Arlington Avenue. The road surface was too slick to navigate for a short time.

"We'll continue to be out there [on the roads] for the course of the night," City Public Works Director Guy Costa said.
