Pittsburgh Steelers Give Head Coach Mike Tomlin Contract Extension

PITTSBURGH (KDKA)-- The Steelers have extended head coach Mike Tomlin.

The team made the announcement Thursday afternoon. Tomlin is now signed through the 2021 season.

"We have signed Coach Tomlin to a one-year contract extension."

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Mike is one of the most successful head coaches in the National Football League," team President Art Rooney II said. "We are confident in his leadership to continue to lead our team as we pursue our goal of winning another championship."

The veterans on the Steelers understand what stability at the head coach position means for a team chasing a championship.

"That's something that a lot of organizations don't do," said Steelers' guard Ramon Foster. "There's not enough of that, because having that sense of comfort of having one coach, one team, you know what to expect, that just gives validation to him that he's doing his job."

They also weren't slow to credit Tomlin with their individual successes.

"It's a big honor to be the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach," said Steelers' defensive end Cam Heyward. "He's meant a lot to not only my success, but everybody here. He pushes us, he's accountable, he lets us know when we drop the ball."

As for attracting talent, Steelers' cornerback Joe Haden credits Tomlin for his decision to pick Pittsburgh.

"I just love him," he said. "He was one of the main reasons I always tell everybody why I ended up coming to the Steelers when I was a free agent. Just the way he treats his players, just the way his coaching style is and ever since I've been here I just loved him even more. As long as he's here I'm really, really excited about that."

Tomlin is entering his 13th season as Steelers head coach in 2019. Tomlin has led Pittsburgh to six AFC North titles, most recently in 2017, and has guided the Steelers to the playoffs eight times, including two trips to the Super Bowl.
