PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert is stepping down.

Steelers president Art Rooney II said Friday Colbert would leave his role after the 2022 NFL draft.

"We'll be doing a search for a new GM, starting immediately," Rooney told KDKA's Bob Pompeani on Friday.

Pompeani: You have some really good candidates internally. How serious will those guys be considered?

Rooney: We do have some good candidates. Omar Khan and Brandon Hunt, both have been with us for a long time now and are good candidates. We'll do a thorough job making sure we interview a good crosssection of people.

Rooney said the Steelers aren't planning to change the organizational structure when Colbert's replacement is hired, and there seems to be interest from both sides in having Colbert stay with the organization in a reduced role.

The news comes after Ben Roethlisberger announced his retirement, leaving the team without their quarterback of almost two decades. The team now faces a long-overdue reboot, and Tomlin has said: "all options are on the table." Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins are two options going into next season.

"Mason has played well when he's had the opportunity and has a winning record as a starter in the league," Rooney said. "Dwayne, he's a young player with a lot of talent, still getting to know him. I know he's looking forward to having the opportunity as well."

Rooney went on to say that he "feels better now" about the direction and potential of the team's run game due to Najee Harris' strong rookie season. But he did say the team needs to be better on offense, saying offensive coordinator Matt Canada is "determined" to make that happen.

The Steelers haven't won a playoff game in 5 years.
