Pittsburgh Police Sergeant Charged With Simple Assault, Official Oppression

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A Pittsburgh police sergeant will be charged with two second-degree misdemeanors for an arrest he made while working at Heinz Field in November.

Police say Sgt. Stephen Matakovich was working a uniformed, off-duty secondary employment detail at a WPIAL football championship game at Heinz Field on Nov. 28. That evening, he arrested a man for a number of charges, including public drunkenness and aggravated assault.

According to police, video footage of the arrest captured on Heinz Field's security cameras led to a criminal investigation. As a result of the findings, Matakovich will be charged with simple assault and official oppression and placed on paid administrative leave.
