PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The chief of staff for Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto's administration has submitted his letter of resignation.

Kevin Acklin announced he will return to the private sector in January. Click here to read his full letter of resignation.

He made his announcement during a budget hearing on Thursday morning.

Acklin has offered to stay on as the chairman of the Urban Redevelopment Authority.

He says whoever takes over for him needs to have one important quality.

"The relationship the mayor has with his next chief of staff is one that is built on trust," Acklin said, "and when you don't have that, that's when you see administrations not advancing policies for the good of the public."

Peduto says he doesn't have an immediate successor in mind.

Acklin's resignation is effective next month.
