Biden Supporters In Pittsburgh Gather For Celebrations In Regent Square, South Side

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Spontaneous celebrations broke out throughout Pittsburgh on Saturday following word that there will be a new president.

A big rally celebrating the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took place outside of the City-County Building on Saturday afternoon.

There was jubilation after Pittsburgh and Allegheny County played a large part in giving Mr. Biden the win.

The celebrations began on the South Side, where hundreds marched across the Tenth Street Bridge, elated that a winner was finally announced and that winner was former Vice President Joe Biden.

"He is the president, I think it's amazing," said one demonstrator.

They ended up in front of the City-County Building downtown, often the sit of angry protests, but today, it was joyous.

"I've honestly never been more relieved to have him as the projected winner," said another attendee.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said he was impressed by the passion of younger voters.

"So many young Pittsburghers," Peduto said. "It's actually the first time many of them have voted and the turnout of the city, 80% for Joe Biden."

In Squirrel Hill, near the intersection of Forbes and Murray avenues, just blocks from The Tree of Life Synagogue, there was another spontaneous celebration.

"Like, it's absolutely insane, like I really thought Trump was going to get re-elected," said one of the Squirrel Hill demonstrators.

It's no surprise that Pittsburghers would be celebrating because once it's all said and done, the city is likely to have gone from Joe Biden with about 60-70% of the vote.

"I'm especially excited about Kamala Harris as the first woman vice president," said a Biden supporter.

The vast majority of these demonstrators wore masks and while several businesses were boarded up in anticipation of riots, but fortunately tonight, the plywood was not needed.
