Pittsburgh In America's Ugliest Accent Contest

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The website "Gawker" has a contest going to determine America's ugliest accent.

Guess who's the number four seed? That's right, Pittsburgh.

The Steel City is even ahead of Philadelphia.

So KDKA's Dave Crawley got reaction from Pixburghers.

He thought about heading to the Norside, the Sahside, or even Dahntahn.

Instead, he thought the Strip District for Yinzers, you know where they sell Stiller stuff n'at.

Yinzers manager John Coen has just the thing to brush up on your Pittsburghese.

"This is a Pittsburghese shirt," he says, holding up a shirt filled with phrases. "It has a lot of words that you'll hear around Pittsburgh."

Not to be nebby, but what kind of words?

The manager responds. "Stillmill, worsh, telepole, keller (that's for color), slippey, Jeet jet? No, j'ue?"

He says some of it is generational.

"You don't hear some of them as much anymore, like redd up, that's something my grandmother would use. And worsh, spicket, stuff like that, things you hear from the older generation. A lot of the younger generation dropped those words. You hear more like an' 'at. Dahntahn."

So what does it all come down to?

"Basically we don't finish any of our words," Coen says. "Everything is cut off at the end."
