Pittsburgh Battling St. Louis In 'Give Kids A Winning Chance' Campaign

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania need your help.

They are competing in a big sports gear collection challenge with St. Louis.

"Chesterfield Mall in St. Louis, which is a sister mall to Monroeville Mall, they are owned by the same company, we're having a competition where they are collecting sporting goods too," Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania's Jim Barry said.

All of the new or gently used sporting equipment collected in the food court at the Monroeville Mall will go to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania.

There are eight locations in the region, which serve 7,000 children.

"We have programs that we run after school where we do the NFL Play 60 program. So, kids utilize the different types of, whether it be kick balls, dodgeballs, baseballs, footballs, basketballs, anything like that would be great," Barry said.

The "Give Kids a Winning Chance" campaign officially kicked off at the beginning of September, but there is big push this Saturday.

There will be a "Day of Play" in the food court and activities will be set up for children of all ages.

Plus, people can make contributions as part of one last push to drum up donations.

Although, kids in both Pittsburgh and St. Louis will be winners at the end of the competition, there is a penalty for the city that doesn't collect the most.

Mall employees in the losing town will have to represent the winners.

"I would hate like heck to see our folks at Monroeville Mall walking around in St. Louis Cardinals shirts, particularly this time of year," Barry said.
